Strelitzia study #29

Eeek! No photo for today but had to post something...
Well, if you are a regular, by now you should be able to tell that I am mad about anything botanical... I also love painting plants so here is a shot of my attempt at a strelitzia - watercolour painting in progress.
Will do my best to get out tomorrow!

All over South Africa botanical artists are feverishly preparing their submissions for the Kirstenbosch Biennale 2008, which opens on the 9th of September at Kirstenbosch, Cape Town.

Hi Angie, thanks so much for your comment. No, unfortunately I only started painting botanical studies this April (after attending a wonderful week-long workshop with Gillian Condy, who is the resident botanical artist at the Pretoria Botanical Garden)so did not have enough time to do the 4 required illustrations. But I will start painting for the next one...I wish I could attend the exhibition at Kirstenbosch too :)

And I am sure you must have fab specimens to paint there in Arizona. I love succulents ;)

Strelitzia? I think we call them Birds of Paradise here.

Your watercolor painting is beautiful. I think you're very talented.

Thanks Hilda. Yes, that a common name for them, their scientific name is Strelizia reginae, and I think most people in South Africa refer to them as Srelitzias.
They are indigenous to South Africa.
